Radio Brighton (now BBC Radio Surrey and Sussex) went on the air early in 1967 because of a severe snowstorm in Sussex cut off the areas east of Brighton including Rottingdean and Saltdean.

So Radio Brighton was among the first few BBC local radio stations which began to launch half a century ago today with BBC Radio Leicester.

The network of radio stations run by the corporation was the brainchild of BBC manager Frank Gillard.
