When ‘Lulu’ co-author Ron Onions landed his big job in New York with the BBC, 5 year old Louise was attending Hillside special school in Sussex.

The headteacher Joyce McCulloch and children signed a hand-made card to wish Lulu on her way.

The school was excited by Louise’s move to America with the rest of the family.

Her mother Doris Onions wrote letter back to the school, once they had arrived in Manhattan and the letters were read keenly and passed round the staff.

Mrs McCulloch said the Newhaven ambulance drivers loved to hear the latest – they had picked up Louise every day for school from the family’s bungalow in Saltdean.
