Some things change, some things don’t. In May 1980, What’s on in London referred to a heavy advertising campaign in progress on LBC and Capital Radio. The writer for the ‘Of all things’ column pointed out the hypocrisy of a campaign to sell cheaper gas appliances on the two radio stations. At the same time, the government said it was rising prices because we were running out of North Sea gas.

And what’s changed? The same column referred to the official attitude to smoking – on the one hand damaging to health and on the other hand ‘necessary to the health of the national budget’.
