Jazz star Lady Day born 100 years ago

imagesThe jazz world is gearing up for the anniversary of the birth of the legendary singer Billie Holiday who was born in 1915 on April the 7th. By a bittersweet coincidence, her nickname is also the day Lulu Onions was born – the 25th of March which is also known as Lady Day, a religious marker at the start of spring. Louise’s parents, Ron and Doris Onions were jazz fans from their early teens.

In fact, Louise was named after Louis Armstrong or Satchmo. The trumpeter and Lady Day often performed together.
