Doris Onions was taking the laundry down from the 18th floor BBC apartment where the Onions family were living in Manhattan. The washing machines were in the basement of Sutton Manor – on the corner of 1st and 53rd street.
Doris realised that her favourite singer from childhood days had walked into the elevator, accompanied by a bodyguard. She decided to pretend that the basket of dirty clothes did not exist and touched Sinatra on the arm and told him how much she liked the song ‘That’s Life’, written by Kay and Gordon.
‘Thank you ma’am’ replied the well-known voice. It certainly brightened up that January day.
