John Lewis also played with Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. He was director of the American Modern Jazz Quartet which he developed from a strictly 1940’s bebop sound to a more refined style of jazz.

He admired the elegance of Duke Ellington’s band.

He started his musical career in a Boy Scout Music group. Before his death in 2001 he played a final concert at the Lincoln Centre in New York City.Image
