Doug reading 8 am news on 8.10.13Londoners were treated to voices from the past as the radio station marked its birthday on the 8th of October 1973.

Newsreader Douglas Cameron returned for a special broadcast and read the 8 am news calmly and with his customary style.

He presented the AM show with his colleague Bob Holness – beating the Today programme for listeners in 1979.

Presenters attended an event organised by the management of 97.3 and then gathered at a party thrown by the many journalists who worked for the station – many of whom like Jon Snow (Channel 4 news) and Martha Carney (BBC Radio 4) and Mark Easton (BBC TV News) went on to higher things.

Ron Onions joined LBC News Radio in 1974 – having spent a year setting up the Capital Radio Newsroom under the enthusiastic eye of film director Richard Attenborough.
