LBC Radio’s connection to the Thatcher family.
The journalist Peter Allen came to Margaret Thatcher’s attention when he interviewed her on LBC. She commented on the quality of his suit. Peter was wearing a jacket and trousers which had been made in Eastern Europe and the Iron Lady liked his sartorial style.
LBC’s sister service Independent Radio News was making its impact on British life during Thatcher’s regime and Ron and his editorial team argued that the Ministry of Defence should give two broadcasting journalists accreditation to cover the Falklands War in 1982. Until then, only BBC and ITN got permission to send reporters.
As editorial director of LBC, Ron employed Carol Thatcher as a phone-in host on LBC – Ron and Doris received three Xmas cards from the Prime Minister and her husband.
